Forgot to mention that I'm compiling VASP 5.2.12.

Please ignore the comment in #FCL=$(FC). Please do reply. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
by default the compiler reads the source only up to column 132, meaning it reads the line only to the "...str(" and not the whole thing "...str(1:i)" leading to the syntax error.
Just copy the flags that were originally included in the compiler command:
FC=/usr/local/gcc-4.6/bin/gfortran46 -ffree-form -ffree-line-length-0 -ff2c -fno-second-underscore
the -ffree-line-length-0 just tells the compiler to read the whole line.
best,
jik

Hello jik,

thanks for your response. i tried using the original line as you suggested:
FC=/usr/local/gcc-4.6/bin/gfortran46 -ffree-form -ffree-line-length-0 -ff2c -fno-second-underscore
instead of
FC=/usr/bin/gfortran
still i'm having the same error mentioned above. please let me know if i'm still making some other silly mistake.

best,
cc
