problems running with Debian3, kernel 2.4

as reported by one of our colleagues, vasp.4.6 and 4.5 crashes with segmentation faults when entering the electronic optimization cycles for large unit cells (about 200 atoms and more) under Debian3, kernel 2.4.
The crashes occured independently of whether
-- serial / parallel (both, LAM, MPICH) executables were tested
-- (default) optimization / no optimization was used to compile
He could solve the problem by upgrading the kernel to 2.6
Other OS (like RedHat Linux) are not affected.
