Spin Orbit Coupling

Dear All,
could anyone please explain the main idea of switching off the symmetry in spin orbit coupling calculations? Is it purely related to the orbital moment determination? The symmetry is changed due to a non-collinear congfiguration, and it would not be reasonable especially in cases of weak anisotropies.
Thanks in advance.
