Slow forum

#1 Post by physicalattraction » Fri Aug 14, 2009 9:40 am

I have one question not about VASP itself, but about this forum. It always takes ages to load the main page, and after that it takes ages to load any other page. It is the slowest forum I've ever seen, though there are never more than 10 people at the same time active on it. How can one optimize this forum?

It is painful to visit this site lately! Time to give the server an upgrade.

I completely agree - the forum itself is probably something like phpBB, which is what most forums use, but I have never seen a slower site in my life either. I mean, the host is located in Vienna, and I am in the U.S. but I do not think it should take that long. I think the "server" is most likely just a regular computer and maybe there is some firewall or weird ftp access or something going on. Who knows. But it is painful visiting this site. I have to keep it open while I am doing my work and read a post every 30 mins or so. Even as I opened this thread I laughed as it took ~ 2 mins to open!

sorry... I am fully aware of this problem. Actually, it is due to tons of idle processes on our web server... some colleagues simply do not seem to care that they have to logout after accessing the ftp server or the forum... and leave their trash behind
Our sys admin does his best to kill these processes regularly, but to be honest, he has other work to do as well.
